I am Tim Moultrie. I am a public high school teacher, a home-schooling parent, and a proud limited-government Constitution-loving Libertarian. I am Pro-Education, Pro-Student, Pro-Parent, Pro-Taxpayer, Pro-Property Owner, and Pro-Real Education Choice.
I am running for State Superintendent of Education to improve education across the board and reorder our educational priorities. Philosophy matters. The philosophical approach one takes directly impacts the service of educating young people. It is my intention to change our current way of "doing" education from one serving the interests of state and local bureaucracies to one serving the interests of students and citizens, as consumers of a high quality educational product. Unlike the other candidates, I alone offer a Contract with the Voters to back my positions.
We are well aware education in South Carolina is less than stellar. We are also aware education in our state is bureaucratically top heavy and ridiculously expensive. Yet, my Republican and Democratic opponents in this race have precisely the wrong philosophies toward education bureaucracies to enable them to make any appreciable and positive changes.
Both will point to their experience working within and running large bureaucracies. Both will claim special ability to gain consensus and promise to "work with the legislature." Unfortunately, these are the worst qualities one could bring to the post of State Superintendent of Education if we are to make any real strides in the right direction. If one cuts away the superficial differences between my opponents, they are, at their root, clones of the previous do-nothing administration.
South Carolina needs a State Superintendent of Education who recognizes the ponderous education bureaucracy itself is the problem. South Carolina needs a Superintendent who is willing to declare war on the legislature on behalf of the students, parents and taxpayers. South Carolina needs a Superintendent whose core philosophy puts the needs of the student and the taxpaying citizen front and center and gives them the tools to make real educational choices and with it, claim real educational improvement. I am that man.
